q. what's the point? this would never actually happen! a Well, actually, it could happen, it just didn't. This game is AU because we figure you've already played out all the canon plots. You know what happens. Where's the fun in that? This game allows you to play with canon and rewrite history. If you like to play the What If game, then this game is for you.
q. how are spouses selected? a. To make sure that we have an even number of male-female purebloods and whatnot, we created a list and selected marriages/betrothals for those people. The names were mostly random and picked without rhyme or reason. Some marriages - like that of Arthur and Molly - were in canon, and since both parties were pure, the marriage stands.
q what if i don't like the spouse my character was given? a Tough cookies. Not every witch or wizard is going to love the person they were paired with, particularly those who were forced to marry. There will be no adjusting to the marriages/betrothals because the Ministry wouldn't allow adjustments.
q but so and so would never marry so and so! a Maybe, maybe not. There are all kinds of reasons why two characters may have decided to get married. Some may have simply preferred to pick their own husband or wife before the Ministry randomly assigned them one. For instance, perhaps Sirius Black picked Evangeline Vance so he wouldn't get stuck with Alecto Carrow or Sassy Yaxley. Someone like Amelia Bones, who works for the Ministry, might have picked a husband to set a good example. You can come up with whatever reason you think suits your character best. And remember, not all of the marriages were forced! For some, the decree merely sped up the process of courting. For others, they may have actually found that they picked the right person and fall in love. You never know!
q why is the filth list so short? a Because there are very few muggleborns and other 'unworthy' people left. Voldemort has been in power for a few years now, and he is routinely getting rid of those with "nasty" blood. Mudbloods are his top priority, and they are frequently captured and killed. Those listed are the witches and wizards who have managed to escape such a fate by hiding in the homes of friends, if they are lucky, or by hiding in the forests.
q what's up with the tainted blood people? a The tainted bloods now make up the working class of Wizarding society. They cannot hold jobs deemed "respectable" (Auror, Healer, Curse Breaker, Professor etc) and are limited to jobs like secretaries, store clerks, and pub owners. Some full-bloods are taken into the homes of the purebloods as servants, governesses, and/or mistresses.
q what's the deal with dissolved marriages? a Take Lily and James for example. James is a pureblood; Lily is a muggleborn. This is unacceptable and a waste of perfectly good pure blood, so under Voldemort's new laws the marriage would be dissolved. Harry would remain with Lily. James, the pure party, would then have to pick a new wife or wait for one to be given to him. It is up to you whether or not your character would see his or her previous spouse. It is possible that a half/fullblooded spouse may still be in contact to an extent - perhaps your character took in his or her previous spouse as a "servant" or perhaps he or she frequents the diner where the previous spouse works. It would be trickier if he or she were married to a muggleborn, for muggleborns are never seen out and about.
q what happens if you don't follow through with the marriage? a You are sent to Azkaban, but your goodies, so to speak, are kept at St. Mungo's so they can continue the pure race without your input. If you are a personal favorite of Voldemort, he may have leniency and allow you to pick a new partner, but that's a big if.
q if all the pure people are being married to other pure people, then how come someone on the filth or tainted list is listed as pregnant with a pure baby? a Either the pregnancy was already underway or someone is sneaking off on the side. Just because Character A is married to Character B does not mean that Character A isn't seeing someone else in secret, get it?
q what is going on with the death eaters? a The Death Eaters effectively run Wizarding London right now with Voldemort sitting at the helm. They hold the highest positions at the Ministry, St. Mungo's, and Gringott's. Very little can occur without their knowledge. Their goals include purifying the wizarding community, encouraging/enforcing/coercing support for Voldemort, and creating a new order system.
q what is going on with the order of the phoenix? a The Order remains in tact, though it is difficult for them to group together. Several of their members have faced personal losses under Voldemort's new regime and focus mostly on ensuring the survival of one another - whether that means someone allows Dedalus Diggle to hide in their basement or make sure that Marlene McKinnon doesn't get forced into working for Rodolphus Lestrange. As the game progresses, so will the Order. They are currently regaining their footing. Their mission is to stand up against Voldemort, though they have to be careful about it. Making a move or going public too early could spell disaster for this outnumbered group.
q excuse me, where is albus dumbledore? a He is in Azkaban. Voldemort had him removed from his post at Hogwarts and sent to the prison three years ago. The Order suspects that Albus is remaining in the prison and biding his time to lull Voldemort into a false sense of security. The Death Eaters are certain that they've captured the old fool and believe that he will die in prison. It's anybody's guess, really. Only Albus Dumbledore knows what's up his sleeve.
q does this mean my character can't be homosexual? a No. Voldemort can't control your character's sexuality. He can merely control who they marry or who they do not marry. Particularly if your character is pure, he or she may be forced into a marriage and expected to reproduce regardless of his or her preference of gender. What he or she does on the side is that person's own business...so long as it doesn't get on Voldemort's nerves.
